Richard Phillips ( Tom Hanks ) is an experienced naval commander , who agrees to work with a new team on a mission to deliver goods and food to the Somali people. Early in the path, he gets the message that pirates have often acted in the seas through which must pass . The situation does not take to materialize when two boats arrive near the freighter, with eight armed Somalis , demanding all the money on board. An initial strategy makes the attackers to retreat , only to return the next day . Although Phillips use all possible procedures to disperse the enemy , they can climb aboard , threatening the lives of everyone . When you think you have managed to negotiate with the pirates , the captain is taken hostage in a small boat . A long and tense negotiations between the kidnappers and the American special services , begins to try to save the captain before its too late .
